About

The Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE) is a federal government institution mandated to oversee the sustainable management and development of Ethiopia’s water and energy resources. Its core responsibilities encompass the management of water resources, water supply and sanitation services, and both natural and renewable energy resources.

As a regulatory authority, the Ministry is responsible for the planning, development, and management of sectoral programs. It formulates and implements policies, strategies, guidelines, and legal frameworks, while also conducting studies and research to enhance sectoral performance. Furthermore, the ministry provides technical assistance to regional water and energy bureaus to ensure coordinated national implementation.

In the area of transboundary water resources and regional cooperation, the ministry represents Ethiopia in negotiations and the signing of international agreements relevant to the sector.

The Ministry is led by a Minister, supported by State Ministers who oversee the major sectors of Water Supply and Sanitation and Energy Study and Development.

Ensure access to water and sanitation supply, energy demand and all over improvement of citizens’ lives by developing and managing water and energy resources equitably, sustainably and in an integrated manner.
